The Vostok project was developed by the Waves Team and emerged as the Waves initiative to make digital technologies accessible and feasible in large state and industrial projects. Launched in April 2018, Vostok aims to create a digital infrastructure for storing and sharing data among participants in the future digital economy.
The project is led by Sasha Ivanov, founder and CEO of Waves, who is considered to be one of the most prominent, respected and influential people in the blockchain space. In 2016, he launched Waves — a public blockchain platform. The name of the company refers to his scientific experience as a theoretical physicist, and the recently discovered gravitational waves predicted by Einstein a century ago. By the end of 2017, Waves became the fastest blockchain in the world after implementing the Waves NG technology.
Today, Waves is an ecosystem of businesses, services and communities that utilise the benefits of the cutting-edge and constantly evolving Waves-developed technologies with 600,000 members worldwide, 300 nodes in 25 countries and a number of applications built on top of Waves Platform. It is also one of the leading centres of excellence in distributed computing and cryptography. Currently, Waves team includes experienced blockchain developers with a proven track record, and many other experts that contribute research, software development, peer review, testing, documentation, design and content creation.
In December 2018, Vostok successfully closed its first round of private investment, securing USD 120 million. This first funding round pushed Vostok’s value up to USD 600 million.
In April 2019, Waves was selected by Rosatom as one of the companies that would develop roadmaps for the nine major technologies of the Digital Economy national project. In cooperation with Novosibirsk Institute of Software Systems (part of Rostec Corporation), Waves team is now integrating its expertise into the roadmap in the field of distributed ledger technologies, and forming an action plan for the development of the technologies to world-leading standards.
Sasha Ivanov graduated from the Physics Department of Moscow State University, Department of Theoretical Physics, and after that he studied at the University of Leipzig. Since 2013, Sasha has been actively engaged in blockchain projects, neural networks (artificial intelligence technologies), distributed systems and cryptography, and in 2016 created Waves - a public blockchain platform.
By the end of 2017, Waves became the fastest blockchain in the world after implementing the Waves NG technology. In 2017–2018, there were many requests for the implementation of Waves technologies as part of ready-made blockchain-based solutions for use by large enterprises and public institutions. But there were two problems: technological (public blockchain is not suitable due to poor scalability and security problems) and organisational (system integrators do not work well with distributed systems). In response to these two challenges, on April 11, 2018, at the event dedicated to the biennium of Waves, the Vostok project was announced under the name of the first spacecraft that raised a person to near-earth orbit.
The leadership of Sasha Ivanov in the Vostok project largely guarantees the use of his accumulated reputational, expert and business capital as one of the most recognisable and respected technology entrepreneurs for the successful development and implementation of the project, expanding its geography and partner pool.
